Lion Joe Tasca (1935-2024)
In his 89th year, passed peacefully in the early morning of Monday, March 18th, 2024. Joe was born January 11, 1935 at St. Joseph Hospital, Toronto and is predeceased by his parents Primo & Concetta Tasca (George). He was a devoted husband to Mildred Bernice Tasca for 68 years and missed her every day since her passing in 2022. Loving father to Christine, Karen, David, Donald, Lori and Lynn and cherished father-in-law of Charles Bulmer, Donald White and Jamie Buglyo. Beloved by his six grandchildren, James, Iris, & Matthew Jennison; Kelly Bulmer; Daniel & Caraline Buglyo. Loved by many Aunts, Uncles, Cousins, Nieces and Nephews both here and in Italy. Joe was a 10 year volunteer driver for the Cancer Society and a recipient of the Helen Keller Fellowship Award as well as the Melvin Jones Fellow Award from Lions Clubs International Foundation. In tribute to his dedication and in celebration of forty-nine years of Lionism, the Nobleton Lions Club presented Joe with a plaque. The Township of King honoured Joe and Bernice for a legacy of charitable work benefiting the Nobleton Community by dedicating the Tasca Community Park in 2016.
The family of Lion Joe Tasca has requested that donations in his memory be made to the Nobleton Lions Club or the Lions Foundation of Canada Dog Guides.
Recognition of Lion Joe Tasca for Outstanding Service
The Nobleton Lions Club recently honoured Lion Joe Tasca for his valuable contribution to the community of Nobleton and his dedication to the cause of Lionism, thereby exemplifying the Lions’ motto “We Serve.”
The plaque presented to Lion Joe by Lion Jerry MacBain reads,” In sincere appreciation and recognition of distinguished service, loyalty and devotion to the objectives and furtherance of Lionism.” Most of Nobleton will know Lion Joe by his tenacious presence in front of the Pharmasave, from August to October for years, selling tickets for the Annual Community Fundraiser Ticket Draw. He did this regardless of the weather, clearly demonstrating the words on the plaque.

Candy for the kids, a visit with Santa, and free skating were enjoyed by all at the Nobleton Arena.
Lions Reverse Advent Calendar
The second annual drive in support of the King Township Food Bank, sponsored by the three Lions Clubs in the township, culminated in the collection of boxes on December 2. Several Lions and junior volunteer Raylan are pictured here with Glen and Nancy Broad who have just dropped off their donation at the Nobleton Arena. The three clubs extend their thanks to all in the community who gave to this worthy cause, which is even more critical this year as the number of clients of the Food Bank has increased by more than a third.

Annual Community Fundraising Ticket Draw
The Annual Community Fundraising Draw took take place at the Nobleton Gazebo on October 28. Winners were: 1st Prize of $4000, Giuliano Fantilli, 2nd Prize of $750, Keri Allen, 3rd Prize of $250, Mario Giovannone. The full story, including a recognition of Lion Joe Tasca’s contribution, appeared in the November 2 edition of the King Weekly Sentinel. John Ciarallo Presented with Hellen Keller Fellowship Award
At the October 24 meeting of the Nobleton Lions Club, Lion Jerry MacBain presented John Ciarallo with the Helen Keller Fellowship Award. John Ciarallo, original owner of the “No Frills” store in Nobleton, retired earlier this year. His continuing support of the Lions and the community over the years was very visible, always present, and greatly appreciated.
Lion Jerry took the opportunity to explain why this particular award is so important to Lions. With the help of an exceptional teacher, Helen Keller learned sign language and braille. A few years later, she learned to speak. As an adult she became a tireless advocate for people with disabilities. And in 1925, she attended the Lions Clubs International Convention and challenged Lions to become "knights of the blind in the crusade against darkness." The Lions accepted her challenge and our work ever since has included sight programs aimed at preventable blindness.
Lion Jerry emphasized the scrutiny to which each recipient is put in order to receive this honour. Undeniably, John Ciarallo did meet those criteria. John very much deserves the words engraved on the plaque: “Who through untiring service, has given light in the darkness, warmth in the cold, compassion in the hurt, and humanity in the suffering to his fellow being. He lives his creed, “service to others”. Congratulations John! Well deserved.

About $24000 was raised at the annual Nobleton Lions Club Fundraiser on June 11 thanks to the hard work of the principal organizer Lion Latif Kassam with help from Lion Jim McDonald, President Andrew Bevil (pictured below right to left), other Lions and volunteers from the community . The Club thanks all those who participated...about 140 golfers and over 70 sponsors...to make it a complete success. Even the showers held off long enough so everyone could enjoy the day.

Provincial Senior of the Year Award
At the Annual Nobleton Lions Golf Fundraiser dinner on June 11, 2023, Councillor David Boyd, on behalf of the Township of King, presented the provincial Senior of the Year Award to Lion Bob Phillips, a long-time hard-working member of the Club.
Earlier this year at the Township of King Volunteer Appreciation event, Lion Bob was honoured with the Township Senior Citizen Award of Merit. He has served his community by joining the Lions in 2009, serving as President of the Nobleton Lions Club from 2011 to 2014, and enthusiastically and generously donating many hours to the many Lions events held for the betterment of Nobleton and the wider community.

2023 Senior Citizen Award of Merit - Lion Bob Phillips

Over $24,000 was raised in our annual golf fundraiser which we were able to hold on June 5 after a 2-year absence. It was hosted by the Nobleton Lakes Golf Club, well-supported by our community and very ably coordinated by Lion Latif Kassam.

2022 Lions Dog Guide Walk
On Sunday, May 29, supporters and their dogs gathered for the annual Lions Dog Guide Walk, with sponsor help from Pet Valu, to raise funds for training dog guides. About $10,000 was raised in support of the Dog Guide program which is a major initiative of the Lions Foundation of Canada. Bev Berger of Nobleton is a strong supporter as well as recipient of the program. She is pictured here with her Dog Guide Lotus.
Our condolences go out to Lion Joe Tasca, a long-time fundraiser for this cause whose wife, Bernice, passed away in September 2022. Donations to this worthwhile program in her memory may be made at the link above.
2022 Lions Victoria Day Parade
At the Victoria Day celebration these Lions, pictured here, and others, gave kids snacks and candy in the parade. Then at the Lions booth in the fair, families enjoyed the balloons and drinks that were handed out by other Lions volunteering that day to help bring back the fun of a much-loved community tradition.
Lion David Harper (1933-2022)

It is with great sadness that we announce the death of David (Dave) Harper, who passed away
suddenly at his home in Nobleton on April 30, 2022.
Devoted husband of 61 years of Greta (nee Pearson) (deceased), loving mother of Cynthia (Bill),
Kevin and David. Proud grandfather of Matthew and Meghan.
Dave was a strong believer in giving back to his community, having volunteered for many years
at Diabetes Canada, Mackenzie Health, Epilepsy York Region and most recently at Maple
Health Centre. He was a founding member of the Nobleton Lions Club, serving in leadership
positions at the club, zone and district levels, as well as acting as co-Chair of the Lion’s
community “Walk for Dog Guides.”
In recognition of his dedication to the community, Dave was the recipient of a Senior Citizen
Award of Merit from the Township of King in 2018.
A visitation will be held at Egan Funeral Home, 203 Queen Street S (Hwy 50), Bolton (905-857-
2213) Thursday, May 5th from 4:00-7:00 p.m.
A Funeral Mass will be held on Friday morning, May 6th at 11:00 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church,
14485 Jane Street, King City.
Interment will follow at St. Patrick’s Cemetery, 91 Church Street, Schomberg.

Tribute to Lion Olav Anderson
Lion Olav on his 80th Birthday
Lion Olav joined the Nobleton Lions Club in January of 2002. Lion Olav was a very active member - willing to help with any function or fund raiser. He was especially skilled in food handling. This talent had been developed throughout Olav's life. In the early 60’s, Olav ran a family style restaurant in Nobleton that was attached to Jim Reeves B A Gas Station at the four corners in Nobleton where the present day PetroCanada gas station is. Olav managed this restaurant, as the cook, from the 60’s to the early 70’s.
After selling that business, Olav next ran another family restaurant “Tiny Todds“attached to a Texaco gas station on Hwy 27 between Nobleton and Schomberg by the 18th Sideroad. Also during this time Olav started working with Harold and Eva Westbrook at Holly Park Meats on the 10th concession where it intersects the 16th sideroad. Eva’s husband died suddenly in 1961 leaving Eva and Olav to run Holly Park Meats. In 1969 Olav and Eva became partners and in the early 70’s built a house on the 16th just west of the 10th, on a parcel of land severed from the Holly Park Meats farm. Together they lived there and eventually sold Holly ParkMeats to a firm from Toronto that process sheep.
Eva suddenly passed away in 2012. Olav lived in the house till 2016 when he sold and moved to a condo in Schomberg. During his life, a hobby that Olav pursued was raising and competing with Homing Pigeons. Olav's pigeons were often winners, “Best Pigeons “, homing from timed drop- offs in the north - places like North Bay and Kapuskasing. Among others, Olav competed for years with friends like Jake Kamstra, Rolf Bachman and Helmut Huber and their pigeons. During his retirement years Olav’s eyesight deteriorated and he was no longer able to drive. So it was that the Lions assisted Olav and Eva with transportation to and from Lions functions. It was fitting then that Lion Olav was awarded the Helen Keller Award in Lionism. For Lions meetings, Lion Jim Casator and occasionally myself Lion Elwood (and others) would pick up and drop off Lion Olav from his house and later his condo. Lion Jim and myself greatly enjoyed this time with Olav whose sense of humour and wit produced many a good laugh!
Lion Olav spent many hours selling Raffle tickets with other retired Lions members like Lion Joe Tasca and Lion Ken Hodgson and others. Lion Olav was always eager to help with food preparation for any Lions functions. Lion Olav was a great Lion for just shy of 20 years. He was a recipient of two prestigious awards in Lionism - the Helen Keller Award and the Melvin Jones Award. Throughout his years as a Lion, Olav was always an active member who contributed a lot to our club! He will be missed by all of us!
Lion Olav passed away on November 28, 2021.

Nobleton Community Street Sale - October 16,17
The Zacchigna Real Estate team organized a Nobleton community street sale which included a raffle for prizes donated by local businesses. Proceeds of $840 were allocated to the Nobleton Lions Club to thank them for all that they do for our community. The news of the tragic situation in India motivated three Nobleton and area service clubs to join forces to purchase seven Oxygen Concentrators. These life-saving machines will be donated to India in support of its COVID-19 relief efforts. 2020 Pet Valu Walk for Dog Guides – Sunday, October 4
Again this year the Nobleton Pet Valu Walk for Dog Guides was a financial success with $6985 raised to fund the training of Dog Guides by the Lions Foundation of Canada. The event is sponsored by the Nobleton Lions Club with the strong support of Bev Berger, a recipient of a number of dog guides over the years. Charter Member David Harper Honoured
At our March 2 meeting Dave Dryden of Sleeping Children Around the World noted that 1962 was the year the Nobleton Lions Club, of which David Harper is charter member, was founded.He then regaled the Lions with another unforgettable event in 1962. It was about his coming out of the stands at a Leaf game in 1962, while still a Junior A goalie, to substitute, very ably, for the injured NY Ranger goalie Gump Worsley, The central characters in both memorable events are pictured above.
2020 Sleeping Children Around the World
At our March 2 meeting, Dave Dryden of Sleeping Children Around the World (SCAW) thanked the club for its continuing support going back to at least 1987. SCAW distributes bedkits to needy children in developing countries around the globe and is marking its 50th anniversary this year..Here Lion Rick Evans presents him with this year's contribution towards these bedkits consisting of sleeping items like mats, mosquito nets, pyjamas, as well as clothing and school supplies, all designed to get the children's education off to a good start. .

2020 Mackenzie Health Presentation
At our January meeting, Sandra Agayby of the Mackenzie Health Foundation gave a presentation on the status of the new campus at Jane Street and Major Mackenzie Drive which is slated to open in late 2020. 2019 Community Fundraising Ticket Draw
On Saturday afternoon, October 26, the draw to select the winners of this year’s Nobleton Lions Annual Community Fundraising Ticket Draw took place at the Nobleton Gazebo. The first prize worth $4000 went to Owen Rogers with Ticket #736, sold by Joe Tasca. The second prize worth $750 was won by Tom and Monica Bevil, Ticket #452, and the third prize of $250 went to Bob Carisse, Ticket #679. Once again all tickets were sold and the proceeds in excess of $12000 will support the activities of the numerous community organizations supported by the club. Our thanks is extended to everyone who participated in this very worthwhile event.
